Crossbows for different needs: Compound crossbows and recurved models for everyone

Archery, and especially crossbow shooting, is becoming increasingly popular and is inspiring many hobby and sports shooters. Our range of high-quality crossbows, such as compound crossbows from our premium brands such as Man Kung or EK Archery, includes a variety of popular shooting instruments for both beginners and active shooting enthusiasts.

Crossbow shooting is a precision sport that, like air rifle or archery, is often contested. Crossbows are modern, fascinating weapons that require less upper body strength than, for example, a bow.

Nevertheless, crossbows, due to their construction with stronger bows, deliver far more energy than an archer can achieve with just the strength of his arm. Due to these enormous acceleration forces, crossbows are used in conjunction with short, solid bolts, as the simple, elastic wooden arrows used in archery, for example, cannot withstand these forces. The bolts and arrows used for compound crossbows and the like are usually made of robust aluminum or carbon and are available in different lengths up to around 55 cm.

Compound crossbow vs. recurved: these are the differences and advantages

There are two fundamental differences in the construction of crossbows that influence the final purchase decision. While recurve crossbows are an older version of this type of weapon with a simple construction, a compound crossbow comes with the latest technology in a compact form.

With recurve crossbows, the tip of the bow unit is bent back when the string is not drawn. They are characterized by the simple design of their bows and comprise a total of four elements: the shaft, the string and a bow unit as well as the trigger. Recurve crossbows are primarily suitable as entry-level models and are characterized by their simple use. A compound crossbow, in contrast, is far more powerful: while recurve crossbows are usually the quieter variants and changing the string is much easier, a compound crossbow requires a much greater amount of force on the archer's upper body.

A characteristic feature of a compound crossbow is that the arrow only reaches its maximum speed at the end of the arrow guide rail. With the recurved version, this happens right at the beginning: with this version, the maximum speed is reached after the trigger is pulled, which causes vibrations and thus impairs precision.

In addition, a compound crossbow is characterized by its significantly longer durability than a recurved crossbow. The disadvantage, however, is that the strings can only be changed by a specialist or with a special press.

In summary, the recurved version is primarily suitable for beginners and hobby shooters. The compound crossbow, on the other hand, is a technically much more complex version, which is characterized by its compact design and enormous efficiency. The more powerful of the two, which is suitable for sports shooters, is definitely the compound crossbow. There are, however, sometimes large differences in price: while recurved crossbows are relatively inexpensive, a compound crossbow is often significantly more expensive due to its complex design and technical functions.

Expert tip: What to look out for when buying a new compound crossbow

One way to recognize a high-quality crossbow is that its trigger unit opens upwards and is made of hardened steel parts. The arrow guide rail and scope rail are ideally made of metal, while the barrel is made of an aluminum core.

Crossbows with a trigger unit made of plastic or sheet metal have proven to be of lower quality. A compound crossbow or similar also promises significantly reduced performance if the scope or arrow guide rail is made of plastic.

Bows vs. crossbows: These are the differences

One thing is certain: Both are very popular weapons that delight hobby and sports shooters! The cheaper option is usually a bow, as depending on the crossbow, there is an enormous amount of technology behind it, which the user then of course has to pay for.

However, a bow scores points because it requires significantly less effort than re-cocking a crossbow. Bows are also usually lighter and more compact than crossbows.

The disadvantage of a professional compound crossbow or similar is clearly the weight: they are heavier and therefore often more difficult to handle. However, crossbows have a higher shooting power and make aiming easier. In addition, the string does not have to be taut when aiming, which reduces the amount of force required.

Legal: Crossbows in Germany

According to German weapons law, no gun license is required to buy crossbows. In Germany, they are considered free weapons, and only a minimum age of 18 is required to own them. The seller of a compound crossbow or similar is obliged to obtain proof of age from the buyer and is committing a criminal offense if he does not do so.
