The free weapons that can be purchased without a corresponding gun license include gas or blank-firing guns. These look deceptively similar to real weapons and are a hit with many enthusiasts and collectors. In contrast to their real counterparts, gas and blank-firing guns are equipped with blank or irritant gas cartridges. They can also fire pyrotechnic ammunition and are therefore used in many places, especially at New Year.

Air rifles are also considered free weapons. The so-called air guns do not contain any propellant. The projectile is propelled by a compressed gas, which means that an air rifle is not considered a firearm, but is available as a free weapon in Germany for anyone over the age of 18.

CO2 weapons are also free weapons. Here, the air is compressed by a spring pressure, for example, through a corresponding piston. As soon as the user pulls the trigger, this compressed air is suddenly released and accelerates the projectile.
