Indispensable in the outdoor area: the lighter

In many situations, the lighter plays a crucial role - if it is suitable for outdoor use. The following tips from ASMC make it easier to choose the ideal "lighter".

Safety is our top priority

To ensure that lighting a camp stove or campfire does not cause a fire or damage to fields, forests and meadows, it is important to ensure that it is used properly and that there are restrictions on the use permit (if applicable). Tip: If the lighter is carried in a tightly sealed plastic envelope, it can also be used in damp/wet environments, for example in an area with rainy seasons. Otherwise, there is no guarantee that the spark will actually work.

Storm lighters are the right tool even in adverse outdoor conditions

The classic among storm lighters is the legendary Zippo. This is a petrol lighter with a flint whose flame does not go out in light to moderate winds. The foam inside absorbs the petrol and the capillary effect ensures that the fuel is directed upwards via the wick. So that you can refill it on the go, there is the Zippo Power Kit with a petrol tank and replacement flint including tools for installation.

Ember point or jet flame lighters can also be lit in stormy conditions. These are special gas lighters. However, they cannot be used at very low temperatures.
The functional Fox Outdoor gas lighter, which is combined with a knife, a corkscrew and a bottle opener, is particularly practical.

Expert tip: Swedish steel - one of the best ways to make fire

Since the Swedish army was looking for a method of making a fire in any weather and with as few tools as possible, the so-called Swedish steel or carbon steel was "improved". You can't say it was "invented", because this type of fire-making already existed back then, in Roman times. Since matches obviously fail in bad weather conditions or simply break too easily, a different approach had to be established. Resourceful developers then created an alloy that generates sparks when rubbed or struck quickly. Sharp-edged metals or stones can be used for this, which limits the materials needed and carried. Another advantage is that it can be made to work at any altitude, including on higher mountain tours. Ideally, such an utensil can be kept in your equipment as a keyring.

Questions: Lighters

How do the lighters in the range differ from normal lighters?

With the exception of the camouflage lighter, which is basically a normal lighter with a camouflage look, all of our "fire givers" are specifically designed for outdoor use. In these cases, petrol is usually used instead of lighter gas. It is considered to be safer from wind and also more reliable.

Special devices also ensure water resistance (not all models) and of course we also have the classic Zippos on offer.

Petrol or gas, what’s the difference?

Petrol lighters are considered all-weather lighters, whereas standard (butane) gas lighters are known more as disposable lighters. You can buy both versions in our shop. The gas versions work without a wick, while the petrol versions work with a wick. They suck the fuel upwards using capillary action, where it is then mixed with oxygen as an oxidizer and burned. A petrol lighter generally has a "steadier" and more voluminous flame than its butane counterparts. It also naturally smells of lighter fluid, whereas butane gas is almost odorless and not intrusive.
