Spades have a wide range of outdoor uses

When camping, in the military or for other outdoor activities, a spade should be carried with you. There are small and light models that can be folded up and then take up hardly any space.

A spade is very easy to use

A field spade can be used not only in the military, but also when camping or for other outdoor activities. It is small, handy and light. The shaft can be easily folded away. This means the spade fits in a backpack or bag. Many outdoor bags offer the option of attaching the spade to the outside of the bag. This way it is always quickly to hand. The spades are used to attach tents or ropes or when holes have to be dug according to other specifications. The professional models are very high quality with a sharp metal spade blade.

Field spades are practical and easy to transport

In contrast to the garden tool, a field spade has only a very short shaft. This is equipped with a practical folding mechanism and is somewhat narrower by default. The tool can often be opened and closed again with just one hand. ASMC offers spades in different versions and made of different types of steel, e.g. carbon steel or stainless steel. Some of them have a handle. The smaller models, which can be conveniently stowed in a backpack, do not have one.

Expert tip: If you don't have a spade handy or it's broken, there is a "natural" alternative

The digging stick. As a replacement for the spade, it makes digging holes or digging up roots easier in survival courses or similar. These should be hardwood sticks, as they can withstand rough loads such as scratching in solid ground best. You can also sharpen one end to make digging a little easier at first.

Questions: Spade

What is the difference between a spade and a shovel?

The main difference here is actually just the area of application. When digging up roots, trees or bushes, the ground is usually a little harder or overgrown. A spade is advisable here to make it easier to penetrate the earth, as it usually has a tread on top so that you can forcefully step on it with your boots or garden shoes. This makes it easy to get into firmer soil. For sand or loose soil, however, a (large) shovel is better, as it is not tapered like a spade and therefore has a larger contact surface. This means that more material or soil can be removed at once.
The ideal spade is available to buy from ASMC.
