Optimal protection on all journeys with tarps from ASMC

A tarp offers more than a classic tent and can even be set up as sun protection or emergency shelter. In our large selection of tarps, we are happy to show you what to look out for when buying.

How to use a tarp correctly?

Before you start your trip, you should check whether you have enough guy ropes to set up the tarp. Since a rope can get lost or damaged while traveling, you should plan on having one or two additional guy ropes.

If the tarp has already been used on a trip, the intact condition of all seams should be checked before the next use. Especially if this type of tent is intended to protect against rain and wind, a closed and undamaged surface must be present. The associated packing bags for ropes etc. should also be intact so that no accessories are lost on a trip.

When attaching the tarp, you should always rely on sturdy supports that ensure that the tarp is held in place even in bad weather. If you are not expecting large trees or other attachment options on your trip, poles are a useful alternative.

How do you find the right tarp for your next trip?

The main differences when choosing a tarp are the number of eyelets and guy points. The higher the number, the more the tarp can be deformed and the more options there are for setting it up. If you can clearly estimate what the tarp will be used for, you will be able to determine the best number of eyelets and their respective positions.

Another criterion for selecting a tarp is its load-bearing capacity, which is typically given in millimeters of water column. A higher value is relevant if the tarp is used as a stable tent or emergency shelter in rain and storms. If it is used as a classic camping tent or as sun protection, a moderate value for the load-bearing capacity is sufficient.

Polyester is a basic material for tarps that can be found almost everywhere, but specialist manufacturers offer different thicknesses and strengths of the material. Blended fabrics that incorporate cotton provide greater stability and are easier to handle, but on average they are more expensive and have a lower water column.

Expert tip:

How do you set up a tarp?

Regardless of whether a tarp is used for camping or as a sunshade, there are many different ways to set it up. Everyone can decide for themselves which variant is most suitable for their purpose.

Questions: Tarps

Are tarps waterproof?

All tarps made of polyethylene and PVC vinyl are water-resistant as long as they are impregnated. If the impregnation wears off, they can be refreshed with a waterproofing agent. Important: Tarps are water-resistant, not waterproof.

What kind of ropes / cords are recommended for attaching a tarp?

A 6mm thick cord of nylon or polyester embroidery thread is a good size, but 10mm diameter is better to be on the safe side. If the diameter is smaller than 6mm, it is recommended to double up the cord.

Is it possible to cook in tarps?

Cooking in tarps is possible, but not recommended. Tarps are mainly made of synthetic fibers and are therefore highly flammable (some manufacturers advertise that their tarps are made of fireproof materials, but this information is not guaranteed). Not only cooking, but also smoking and fire of any kind (e.g. candles) are prohibited in or under tarps.

What is the permille thickness?

Permille is the unit of length used to determine the thickness of the tarp material. Permille corresponds to 0.0254 mm. It can be assumed that the thicker the material, the better the quality.
