Pedometers help build fitness

Pedometers, as they are known in technical terms, are small, lightweight and practical devices that can be carried in a trouser pocket or attached to a belt. They are used to analyse the frequency of steps taken within a certain period of time.

Pedometers are very easy to use

Carrying a device like this with you is a good idea for any outdoor activity or sport if you want to be able to analyse how high your step frequency was over a certain period of time. The devices can be used not only for sport but also for walking or simply running to determine how much movement you do in a day. It is very easy to use. The pedometer is simply put in your pocket or attached to a belt. There are various models with different attachment options. With the exception of one model, all of the devices use a battery or rechargeable battery, the energy reserves of which should be sufficient for the intended period of use. Once switched on, the device records all movements and counts them as steps. The frequency is shown on the display. The display can be reset and restarted if necessary.

There are different types of meters?

The ASMC shop offers various types of devices that can be attached in different ways. The sizes also vary so that the customer can tailor the device to their needs. The pedometers, e.g. from Silva, are easy to use and have low battery consumption. Many models have a button cell integrated. This can last up to a year depending on how often it is used and is very easy to replace. The pedometers are available at different prices and can be colour-coordinated to match clothing.

Expert tip: Your smartphone can also function as a pedometer

With the help of the right app, a modern smartphone with its many sensors can of course also function as a great pedometer. The mobile phone's motion or vibration sensor is checked very frequently and the app quickly detects the steps of a moving person. However, the biggest disadvantage of this solution quickly becomes apparent: the battery life of smartphones. Such a constantly active app, which also checks sensors, naturally takes a toll on performance.

Questions: Pedometer

What happens to the count when a break is taken?

When hiking, for example, you naturally take breaks from time to time. Modern pedometers simply stop when this happens because they recognize this.

How exactly do these devices work?

Since this usually involves working with a small mercury contact or an electronic (gyro) sensor, inaccuracies are inevitable. Uneven ground or an uneven walking rhythm can intensify this effect.

How are the devices attached to the body?

Many models can be easily put in your pocket. Some have straps to hang around your neck. Others come with a bracelet so you can fasten them around your arm or leg.
