Headlamps for perfect lighting

With ASMC headlamps (also called headgear) you can achieve optimal illumination of your surroundings. We will show you what is important and which models are available.

What should be considered when using headlamps?

When putting the lamp on, it is recommended that you hold it tightly against your head. The headband on most models has an elastic band so that the band can be flexibly adjusted to the head and a firm and secure hold can be ensured.
If the headlamp has been in use for a while, it is advisable to check the battery. Always carry spare batteries with you in case of emergency. The part of the headlamp that provides the lighting should always be cleaned before use. Otherwise, your vision could be obscured.

These lamps can of course be switched on and off as desired via a switch and some even offer various other operating modes such as flashing.

Which headlamp is suitable for me?

In general, there are no major differences between headlamps. In terms of functionality, the many different models only differ in a few points. However, the visual design of the headband should be taken into account. This can be purchased in a wide range of colors. In addition to black, gray and green, headbands with camouflage elements can also be selected.

While some headlamps only have a headband that goes all the way around, other models also have a headband that runs vertically over the head. This provides additional support if you want or need to use them in situations where there is rapid or a lot of movement.

Modern headlamps are equipped with LED lights. These have a variety of advantages. Firstly, they are extremely energy efficient. This means that they can be used for several days at a time. Secondly, when choosing the right headlamp, you can choose between models with a single LED and versions with multiple LED bulbs.

Expert tip:

Our recommendation for the flexible bright spot: Ledlenser

Since you simply cannot make headlamps yourself at such low prices as those that come today with good LED technology and properly manufactured by the manufacturer, we want to focus on a special product group in this tip: the Ledlenser. The difference to a normal headlamp is a lens system that is built in front of the light source. By adjusting the lenses (the distance between them), you can easily change the beam angle or the light cone. This means that you can use these lamps for all purposes, regardless of whether you want to shine very far or want a broadly scattered light in a dimmed version for reading. The icing on the cake with these top models is a stepless dimming function to regulate the brightness. In some devices, the battery is also attached to the back of the strap, which is unusual for the genre, which distributes the weight better and significantly increases wearing comfort.

Questions: Headlamps

Which lighting technology is used?

Nowadays, LEDs are the only light source used, as they are simply unbeatable in terms of energy efficiency and maximum light output. Those who need extreme brightness will usually opt for models with multiple LEDs as a source, as these multiply the light intensity. Most lamps can be switched between different brightness modes.

What are the differences between the different models?

In principle, there are only marginal differences, which are usually limited to the carrying systems or perhaps additional operating modes. If you do a lot of walking with your headlamp and make quick and jerky movements, you will prefer a third strap that runs from the back to the front and over the head. This type offers the best hold. Many lamps can also be attached to helmets or, once the rubber bands have been removed, have a strong magnet that can be used to attach the lamps to a tent pole if necessary. There are also (more stable) helmets or protective helmets with specially built-in lamps so that nothing can slip. These are then more commonly called head lamps.

In addition to the classic continuous light mode, some models also offer other operating modes such as flashing, so that you can draw attention to yourself. But the beam behavior also differs depending on the model. Here you should decide beforehand what kind of angle or beam type you need or prefer. The type and number of bulbs used also determines up to what distance you can use the lamp (reading, long-distance vision, etc.). You may also want to pay attention to a higher level of water resistance if you want to use the lamp in damp caves or in rainy areas. The weight doesn't really differ much, since a single design has now basically prevailed. What you should also pay attention to is the type of power supply. Because depending on the type of use, it is important to be able to continue using the lamp even after the first set of batteries has been used up.

What are possible areas of application?

In addition to very simple uses such as jogging or cycling at dusk (here as an additional lamp that always follows the movement of the head), reading on the go (tent etc.) and of course cave exploration, climbing and DIY are possible scenarios. Basically all activities where you need or should have your hands free.
