Glow sticks provide a powerless light source using chemiluminescence

A light source that doesn't need electricity or batteries is particularly useful when you're on the go. Glow sticks that work as glow sticks are therefore suitable for many outdoor activities.

A so-called glow stick is very easy to use

Glow sticks are available in many different (neon) colors. They are very easy to use. The sticks are taken out of the packaging and simply bent. At this point they start to glow in the intended color. The luminosity is weaker than that of a flashlight or a light bulb. Nevertheless, it helps with orientation in a completely dark environment. And last but not least, children have a lot of fun with the practical lights. They glow for up to twelve hours and can then simply be thrown away in the household waste. The glow sticks are recommended for ages eight and up.

Glow sticks are available in different colors

The glow sticks can be bought individually in different colors. For example, they are available in green, white, red, blue, purple and yellow. The luminosity is the same regardless of the color. At ASMC, glow sticks can also be purchased with batteries. These are not classic glow sticks, but the battery-operated glow sticks are a very good alternative to a flashlight, as there is no glare effect due to the lower luminosity. All glow sticks can be used in various outdoor areas, such as camping, in the military and on hikes. The glow sticks can be used independently of power sources. If the luminosity is not sufficient, battery-operated models should be used. However, you must take enough batteries with you. It is best to use both versions, so you are independent during outdoor activities.

Expert tip:

Use glow sticks as a light source while also providing camouflage

There are glow stick models that only emit their light in the infrared range and can therefore only be found with a night vision device. This of course makes you almost invisible if you are wearing a night vision device and can therefore use the light source. The human eye cannot perceive the wavelength of infrared rays. ,

Questions: Glowsticks

How does a glow stick work?

Bending the rod breaks a small tube inside, which then causes the previously separated chemicals to react with each other. The reaction is also called peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence.

1 A plastic tube encloses and protects the contents 2 Hydrogen peroxide in a glass tube 3 A phenyl oxalate and fluorescent dye solution 4 Hydrogen peroxide

What chemicals do glow sticks consist of and how toxic are they?

In a plastic casing, two chemicals are mixed together or reacted by bending, which then sets off a chemical process that releases light. However, many sticks are specially filled with non-toxic ingredients, which makes it possible to dispose of them in the household waste. In detail: The sticks usually contain hydrogen peroxide in the glass tube, which is broken inside when the stick is bent. The liquid around it is then usually a phenyl oxalate (oxalic acid ester) and fluorescent dye solution (fluorophore). Trichlorophenol and dinitrophenols have also proven to be good oxalic acid esters in tests.

How long do glow sticks shine?

Depending on the model of the stick, the lighting time can be 4-12 hours.

What else are glow sticks called?

There is also the very common term "glow sticks" which is particularly popular among children. The English term "glow sticks" also comes from the English language.

What special variants are available at ASMC?

We have special sticks on offer that do not necessarily fall into the category of glow sticks, but have a similar function. For example, the McNett sticks with photoluminescent pigment technology can be easily charged during the day with normal daylight and then release their stored energy in the dark. Then there are normal glow sticks in a mini version. They don't cost much in a pack of 10 and take up less space. We also have the equally popular party sticks, which are particularly long and thin and easy to shape, in our range. And finally, there are models that are battery-operated and can therefore be used again and again. These usually work with LED technology, as it is particularly energy-efficient.

What is the advantage of glow sticks?

It is often stated that this dim glowing light does not attract mosquitoes, which is one of the biggest advantages. They are also suitable for underwater use, which of course opens up a whole host of possibilities. Otherwise, the colored lighting is usually just fun. You can also hang the sticks on the Christmas tree at Christmas, for example, as they avoid the annoying issue of candles and the associated fire hazard.
