Berets are the be-all and end-all of any military outfit - at least as long as a helmet is not required. They not only give the wearer a distinctive, personal feature, they also make a statement. Badges and colors reveal which unit a soldier belongs to and strengthen the corps spirit. The material of choice for headgear is wool felt. What do the colors of the headgear say?

They identify the different branches of the military. Some examples: green berets are worn by infantrymen, burgundy red is the color of the paratroopers and army aviators. Black belongs to the armored troops. Coral red berets are worn by combat support troops such as the military police and radio operators. Officer candidates traditionally wear this headgear in navy blue . Commando berets are also occasionally mentioned, but this generic statement cannot be assigned to a specific color, as the word is a kind of umbrella term.

Who wears which beret and when?
