Gas and blank firing weapons delight many fans, enthusiasts and collectors with their appearance. The original replicas are deceptively real copies of famous brands such as the RG96 from Röhm as a copy of the P8 from Heckler and Koch. The replicas are often difficult to distinguish from the original and only reveal themselves upon closer inspection through small engravings on the barrel.

The gas and blank-firing weapons are often used at New Year's Eve celebrations to create signal effects and to fire pyrotechnic ammunition. This is why the replicas are often referred to as signal weapons.

The main purpose they are intended to serve, however, is self-protection. Signal weapons emit a loud bang when fired, which has a deterrent effect on the attacker and is intended to protect against attacks. Gas and blank-firing weapons are intended to keep the enemy at a distance and offer significant advantages compared to the use of pepper spray or batons. The point is simply to create a window of time through the loud bang effect and the far-reaching gas charge, which is sufficient to call for help and attract attention in emergency situations.

In contrast to other imitation weapons, gas or blank-firing weapons are freely available for sale to people over 18 and can be purchased without a special license. However, to carry them in public, a "small firearms license" is required, which is issued by the regional authorities. To do this, the authorities obtain a police clearance certificate, which is sufficient as a basis for the KWS. It should be noted at this point that carrying gas or blank-firing weapons in public without a firearms license is a criminal offense. This can result in a high fine or even imprisonment of up to 3 years. The KWS is only not required for transport, provided the ammunition is kept separate from the weapon.

Gas and blank-firing weapons are effective for self-protection thanks to their signaling effect. Even though they probably don't fire real ammunition like real weapons, they are far from harmless and can be extremely dangerous when used. Gunpowder fumes of around 3000 degrees Celsius are released when the trigger is pulled and can cause life-threatening injuries. It is therefore important to be extremely careful when handling gas and blank-firing weapons and not to misuse them. In cases of doubt, they can pose a great danger to the wearer and others and can have serious consequences.
