Due to their versatility, tarpaulins have become an indispensable part of everyday life. We will show you what is important when selecting and handling them.

What should be considered when purchasing and using tarpaulins?

Basically, covering or guying tarpaulins are used to protect materials from moisture, wind and damage. They are used both indoors and outdoors. When buying, make sure that the tarpaulin is made of robust material and is water-repellent. The tarpaulin should also have reinforced corners; it is also an advantage if the seams are sealed to protect against the effects of the weather. Careful workmanship of the eyelets should be ensured to prevent them from tearing. A larger number of guying points helps to evenly distribute the tensile load when tensioning the tarpaulin and prevent it from tearing quickly, even in strong winds.

The thickness of the material should correspond to the intended use. A thicker tarpaulin is more robust and tear-resistant, which is reflected in a higher weight and larger dimensions when folded. A thinner tarpaulin is therefore particularly suitable for outdoor applications - such as camping trips on foot - due to its low weight and its "backpack-friendly" dimensions. Thanks to its insulating properties, it can also be used as a sleeping bag base. It goes without saying that ASMC also offers models in camouflage look.

What types of tarpaulins are there?

Different types of tarpaulins are available on the market depending on their intended use. For vehicles, a distinction is made between tarpaulin curtains, trailer tarpaulins and standard tarpaulins, whereas universal tarpaulins with high strength are used in the entire construction trade, as well as in painting and wallpapering. There are special covers for swimming pools. Tarpaulins for military use and the survival sector usually have to meet individual requirements in terms of weather resistance and color (camouflage).

What are the differences between the individual tarpaulins?

Tarpaulins can generally be differentiated according to their reusability, weight, light permeability and UV resistance as well as their tear resistance, heat resistance and general weather resistance. Which properties should be given preference depends, of course, on the intended use.

What does the term "water column" mean?

The water column is a unit of measurement that indicates the tightness of technical fabrics. It measures the level at which the first drops of water seep through the fabric within 24 hours from a cylinder filled with water with a diameter of 10 cm that is placed on the fabric to be tested. The value is given in "mmWS" and is particularly important when high pressure is to be exerted on the material.
