The pocket knife is the classic for on the go

There are many different types for even the most remote areas of use. At ASMC you can find the right pocket knife for every purpose.

What should be considered when using pocket knives?

When using pocket knives, you should make sure that they are properly protected. Sharp pocket knives can cause serious injuries during physical activity or use in nature, or even damage equipment. Proper securing is therefore essential.

"Swiss Army knives", often used as a synonym for "pocket knives", can be used for many different purposes. Depending on the purpose, the blade must be extremely hardened so that it can withstand heavy loads. The ASMC range includes both pure knives - not only from Victorinox - as well as all-rounders with various functions, e.g. integrated into tools such as Leatherman.

Which is the right pocket knife for me?

Before choosing a pocket knife, you need to determine what you want to use the knife for. Based on this, you can then choose the length, thickness and alloy of the blade. Knives differ in particular in terms of their design and the way the blade is processed. In addition to smaller or even miniature pocket knives, there are of course also larger versions available. In addition to pure knives, you can also buy all-purpose pocket knives, which contain other useful tools in addition to the blade. Such models are of course ideal for longer trips. It is important that the knife is not too big for the intended purpose. Before buying a pocket knife, you should consider how it will be attached to your clothing.

Large knives should be attached to your trousers or carried in your backpack. Smaller pocket knives with a low risk of injury can also be carried in your pocket. Pocket knives are made of hard alloys, which is why they are suitable for many different purposes. Regular grinding of the blade ensures optimal sharpness. How quickly a pocket knife wears down depends, among other things, on the alloy. Inferior pocket knives become blunt relatively quickly. High-quality alloys ensure long-lasting and reliable quality and sharpness. The handle of the knife should be made of a suitable material. This is the only way to ensure that you cannot slip on the handle. This is of course also recommended for hunting knives.

Expert tip: How to sharpen a knife without a whetstone?

A gentle sanding effect can be achieved using the underside of porcelain cups or plates. These usually have an edge on the underside that is not glazed and this is where the porcelain appears blunt. Knives can be sharpened precisely with or on this edge. It works in principle like a sharpening steel.

Questions: Pocket knives

What makes a knife a so-called bushcraft knife?

The main purpose of such a knife is to work with wood. One of the features that makes a knife a bushcraft knife is a "drop point blade shape". Convex-shaped blades are often found because they can cut/split wood very well and stay sharp for a long time, partly because of their stronger tip due to their design. A Scandi grind is also very popular because it is easy to resharpen and can also be used perfectly for woodworking.

Forbidden knives - which ones are not allowed?

According to the German Weapons Act (WaffG Annex 2), some types of knives are classified as weapons and are therefore prohibited.

Prohibited knives are:
1. Falling knife (knives whose blade springs out of the handle due to gravity when a locking device is released)
2. Switchblade knives (knives whose blades shoot out at the push of a button)
3. Fist knives (These are knives with a handle that runs across the fixed blade and is intended to be used in a closed fist)
4. Folding knives with two-part, pivoting handles, i.e. the butterfly knives known from films
5. Knives whose type is designated as a weapon in the law and whose shape is suitable for simulating another object. These are, for example, walking sticks with a sword or belt buckles with a dagger.

How often should you sharpen knives?

As soon as the cutting edge is blunt, i.e. the knife no longer cuts anything or only cuts with great force, it needs to be sharpened. However, there is no clear definition of when a knife is considered blunt, so it remains an individual decision. As a rule, you can assume that a knife that is used frequently should be sharpened 1 to 3 times a year.

Home remedies for rust from the blade?

To remove rust from small parts, you can often use a homemade acid made from commercially available vinegar essence and salt. The rust-removing power is limited - you sometimes have to rinse, scrub a little and pour in again. The acid does not attack the material. Another way to get rid of rust is cola. Put the blade in the cola for an hour and repeat the process depending on the degree of rust until the rust is gone.

What knife does Rambo use?

In the movie "Rambo" the knife First Blood is used by Sylvester Stallone.

What is a Damascus knife?

The Damascus knife is made from a very special material, "Damascus steel", as it originally comes from Damascus. Hard (brittle) and soft (elastic) types of steel are forged together and folded several times to create many layers. The different layers are then treated with acid to make them visible as a structure. The image of this steel can be determined either from one type of steel or from several types of steel. The state of the steel, which has a clear structure, can be polished or etched.
