Saws are needed for different purposes

Saws are indispensable in the outdoor area. They should not only be small and handy, but also offer a high level of functionality.

Hand saws should be easy but safe to transport

The range of saws in the ASMC shop is so diverse that the right tool can be found for every purpose. If the saws are to be used as a tool outdoors or when camping, they must of course not be dependent on electricity to operate and they must be easy to transport. Saws that can be folded up are practical. This means that no injuries can occur during transport. When unfolding, care must be taken to ensure that the mechanism engages properly. Only then can safe use be guaranteed. Some models have an extra lock for this purpose.

Main task: Separating different materials

A functional saw consists of a handle and a saw blade. This can cut a wide variety of materials. A different saw blade is needed for wood than for metal. There are models where the saw blade can even be changed if necessary. These are then equally suitable for cutting firewood and necessary metal sawing work.

A good saw is characterized by a handy handle and a sharp saw blade. This can cut the material quickly and safely. The teeth must not break and must not get stuck in the material. The handle must be shaped so that the saw can be held well and, above all, safely.

Expert tip: How to build a wood saw?

Since you usually can't take really well-functioning wood saws with you because they are too bulky and heavy, here are a few instructions on how to make a saw yourself.

Required material : branches, saw blade, screws + nuts, pocket knife

Construction instructions : Construction instructions: For the saw arms, which are used to tension the saw blade and also hold the saw, two strong but elastic branches are used. Birch or ash are often recommended in various instructions on the Internet, as they offer these properties. You need pieces about 30 centimeters long, which will form the beams of an 'H', which represents the frame of the saw. Cut outs for the saw blade are made on the lower side, e.g. with a pocket knife.
For stabilization, we need a crossbeam, i.e. a piece of branch that is used as a brace at the top. For this, recesses must also be made in the beams (see pictures). A rope is stretched at the top for final stabilization and to tension the saw blade, which is then tightened until the saw blade is under tension. A small stick can also be used to tighten the rope by twisting it in, which is then attached to the beam so that the tensioning rope cannot unwind again.

Questions: Sawing

What types of saws are there?

The ultimate type of saw is of course the chainsaw, which is usually available in electric and petrol-powered versions. However, since these are rarely used outside of forestry operations or in the home (garden), most people make do with a wood saw, which is generally the most commonly used saw when out and about. These are available in a wide variety of versions and can even be made yourself if necessary (see tip above).

However, there is also a manual chainsaw for outdoor enthusiasts that comes relatively close to the original functionality. It can even be used alone, but is better with two people, and (ideally) saws all around a trunk at the same time. However, the trunks should be fixed in place for this, as it can otherwise be very difficult to handle the saw (especially if you are alone).

So-called folding saws have the advantage that they take up as little space as possible in your luggage and are also extremely easy to transport from a safety point of view. The saw blade folds under the frame (usually made of aluminum), which automatically means that nothing can happen.

In contrast, folding saws are saws that can be folded into a handle, similar to larger pocket knives, which are more suitable for smaller sawing jobs, but take up even less space than folding saws.

The lowest common denominator, however, is the wire saw, which takes up the least space and can be transformed into a "real" saw in just a few steps. A special sawing rope is stretched between two branches, for example. However, it can also be used by two people without this tensioning process and enables relatively quick and easy sawing. Tip: The saw can also be used very well for craft work, e.g. if you don't have a jigsaw for cutting out pieces, e.g. in a star shape.

What else should you pay attention to?

The blade of a saw should, if possible, be (easily) replaceable so that torn or worn saw blades can be replaced. Folding saws should also have a locking mechanism so that no injuries can occur.
